A Letter from the Advisor: Where we are coming from and where we are headed for next year….

Over the past 8 years, I have tried to build a cheer program that benefits the lives of the students at Sonora. Cheering
at games is memorable and exciting for each individual cheerleader and will always be a priority for Sonora Cheer. In
building up the program, during the 2004 cheer season, I began to take Sonora to competitions seeing an instant
positive growth amongst the squads. Through competition, I believe the girls got more out if the program. They worked
more as a team and built up the program we have today. The pride felt within Sonora Cheer comes from the dedication
and Championship record we hold from competitive cheer. Competition was mandatory for all girls up until 2 years ago
due to financial issues for many of the families. By making competition optional, I have seen more issues arise within
the booster program and feel a wall being built between those who compete and those who do not. It has been more
difficult to fundraise and build up the program as a whole.
Relationships amongst the Sonora Cheer family have decreased in the past two years. I understand that we are all
affected by the financial crisis and continue to work towards making Sonora Cheer affordable for all Sonora students.
In deciding how Sonora Cheer will be structured next year, I am working towards building a more cohesive and positive
program helping the cheerleaders build better/stronger teams while experiencing the most out if the program.

Sonora Cheer 2010-2011 will be returning to the former game/competition team structure used from 2004-2007 with
the following guidelines:

•        All sophomore, junior and senior cheerleaders will be a part of game teams and at least one competition team.
Freshman will not compete but must attend all in-state competitions to support Sonora  Cheer.
•        We will be attending 4 Competitions between November and February. Comp Fees will be under $350
(includes February Vegas Room costs) and fundraising will be provided to help alleviate at least 50% of costs.
•        Song Leaders on Pom will compete in 2 Divisions (Pom & Jazz).
•        Sophomore, Junior & Senior Song Leaders are able  to tryout for Pom/Jazz or Hip Hop.
•        Sophomore, Junior & Senior Yell Leaders are able to tryout for Showcheer or Hip Hop.
•        All Showcheer members will be invited to compete in the Specialty Stunt Category for Competition.
•        To keep cost down, we will be using the same 2007 competition uniform, 2009 game uniforms, 2009
   Warm-ups, Polo and Jerseys
